Ironman completed – still no bike…

Well my first ironman is now complete.  Unfortunately my bike is still in the hands of thieves and has not shown up.  I was lucky enough to borrow a bike from a good friend in Melbourne (thanks Dave) and despite being a few inches too small – but was a great bike to ride (4:55 bike time) – I’ll post some pictures shortly.

The reward of $500 is still up for grabs – so please email me with any information that you may have.  I really don’t like my chances (now six weeks since it was stolen), but as stated on previous posts – it is quite a unique bike, so I’m sure it will be seen at a triathlon or time trial event in the near future.

Thanks again for the all help from the cycling and triathlon community – great to see people that care.

Body Corporate Duty of Care?

I live in a high-rise unit of which is classified as a “secure” building.  This means key card access upon entry to the building, the car park, each level of the building and to use the lift.  There is also multiple CCTV cameras on each entry and exit point in the building and car park as well as a security guard.  I have requested (as so have the police) the footage from these cameras as well as the log of the security guard and building access logs.  So far – I am yet to receive any information from the building manager.  Does anyone out there know what the duty of care of a Body Corporate is?  If they advertise a secure building – what actually are their rights and responsibilities.  Any help around this matter would be greatly appreciated – as so far they have been very un-cooperative with the process.

Thanks again for all the help – and email me (lmbasell@gmail.com) with any help around this issue or if you see any cheap Cannondale TT bikes for sale…

And yes my helmet was also taken…

Please feel free to pay me out for wearing an aero helmet – but I honestly picked this up on eBay for $15.5 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300456018840).  I thought this may help as I couldn’t imagine there are that many of these helmets going around (its not like its a Giro Advantage).  The helmet had the number #65 on the side (it was only a sticker) from the last race I did.

Thanks to everyone that passed this link on and / or emailed me – I received over 1,500 hits on this blog on the first day which is great to see the cycling / triathlon community at work.  While not holding my breathe it is positive to see so many people out there who want to try and make good out of a bad situation.  If you could continue to pass this link on I would really appreciate it (especially to all those people that added this link (http://pleasefindmybike.blogspot.com) as their Facebook status.

$500 Reward

Thanks to everyone that has helped distributing the links to the site.  If you are the person that helps me get my bike back I will pass on a $500 reward.  This will be no questions asked - if I get my bike - I will give $500.  Please email with any information.  lmbasell@gmail.com

Please find my bike…

On the weekend, I had my car and house broken into, and most importantly my bike stolen.  After a not very useful visit from the local police, I decided to try to see how powerful the web was, and if it was possible to use the web to track my bike down.  I looked for sites that registered lost and stolen bikes but didn't find anything useful.

So what is my bike?

It is somewhat unique in that it is an XL (60cm) Cannondale Slice.  I can't imagine there are too many other XL time trial bikes out there (I don't see too many big guys competing in tris) and so thought of all bikes, this one would be one that could be tracked?  My bike has SRAM red componentry, a SRAM S80 rear wheel, S60 front wheel and a Zipp Vuka head unit (and stem).  I think this head unit makes it a little more unique as its not standard Cannondale equipment.

Please note that the above pictures show the bike with Zipp wheels – the bike was stolen with S80 / S60 wheelset as described.

Why is the Bike Important to Me?

This year I decided to train for the Bussleton Ironman. I’m not your typical triathlete, coming from a background in Aussie Rules football, and supporting a 197cm, 107kg frame, I am certainly no Mark Allan, Dave Scott or Craig Alexander. After seeing several friends compete in different ironman events, I decided it was time for me to take up the challenge. I decided to go out and purchase a time trial bike (my much loved Cannondale Slice) to encourage me to stay motivated throughout the year. I know have less than four weeks until Bussleton and no bike to complete this on. It should be noted that my bike (foolishly) was not insured, so it’s not as simple as claiming for a new one (school boy error).

So what happened to my bike?

Well it was stolen. My bike was left in a “secure” car park storage unit. This storage unit was locked and is a closed cage (ie you can’t see the contents inside). At the same time a brick was thrown through my car window with several items stolen (but nothing as important to me as the bike). The police believed this was a targeted attack and that someone must have seen me locking my bike away. I live in St Leonards, NSW.

How can you help?

The cycling community is a very big and tight group of people. I’m hoping anyone that reads this mentions it to someone and eventually my bike is tracked down. I’m also hoping all local bike shops read this and any that are offered an XL Cannondale Slice for sale know to contact the police.
